Binxcat1 Begins

How it all began...

I have always loved paper and pens, I have always been a collector of ephemera and I have always kept some sort of diary or journal.  My mother will tell you all about how I adored buying back to school supplies and had to have a new notebook every time we went to the shops.  I also had a love of lettering and calligraphy. So I think I have always been a scrapper of some description.  Actually, I thought I invented it when I started my first son's baby book! ;)  BUT my very first memory of consciously thinking about putting photos into albums along with ephemera was prompted by my oldest sister.  When she toured through Europe back in  the late 1980s she brought home postcards and tickets and stickers and placed them in her photo albums along with the photos she took.  I was hooked... THAT was my light bulb moment.  I knew I wanted to make books like that.  It started with my high school diaries... decorated with coloured pens... embellished with a lolly wrapper... a note from a friend stuck inside... that is until the nuns banned us from "defacing" our "school books"!  I also used to spend hours covering files and folders with decoupage made from pictures cut out of fashion magazines. ;)

I was introduced to a more formal "scrap booking" style through Creative Memories about 10 years ago.  I bought a few albums and a bit of stuff but it didn't really suit what I wanted to do.  Then I found scrap magazines and online forums, where I was known as Binxcat1, and I was in my element.  I started scrapping as I know it now about 5 years ago.

Incidentally, I chose the name Binxcat1 as my username because he was our little black cat. He was named after a boy who was turned into an immortal black cat from a movie called Hocus Pocus.

The 1 was just because the computer suggested it while I was registering for the forum.

My initial interest in scrapbooking was to record family history but now I scrap for me, for the fun of it, for the creative outlet... oh and the shopping!  I am a complete product junkie and want everything I see!

I have no idea what "my style" is and I like it that way.  My taste in scrapping is much like my taste is music, a little bit of everything, so perhaps (and at the risk of sounding like a wanna be!) I could call myself “eclectic”.  I do like to include embellishments on my LOs that are relevant or symbolic to the story and I usually try to include journaling on my pages.

Scrap booking has also introduced me to many wonderful friendships.  I have found much inspiration, support and motivation from my fellow scrappers and I am so glad I finally found “my thing” in scrap booking.  I was lucky enough to be named a Scrapbooking Memories Master in 2008 and loved creating for the magazine.  I am also really excited to be on the Design Team and to be teaching at Tomorrow’s Memories, to be on the Twiddleybitz Design Team and the Scrap the Boys Creative Team.  I look forward to becoming even more involved in this fabulous craft and all it has to offer.
